Case Study

East West Prevention

About the client

East West Prevention, founded by Diana Hu McDowell, is the first organization of its kind in Asia dedicated to youth substance misuse prevention. The organization works with schools worldwide to help students make safer, healthier choices by combining behavioral science, data, and Diana’s lived expertise into a uniquely positioned mission.

The Challenge

East West Prevention had something rare: a credible, evidence-based approach to a topic most organizations talk about poorly. But the mission needed sharper communication to land with its ideal audiences.

The challenge wasn’t volume of content. It was clarity. Diana’s expertise and Diana’s voice were the organization’s biggest strategic assets, and they needed a content framework that put both at the center.

Execution Plan

This was a strategy engagement rather than ongoing execution. The goal was to give East West Prevention the foundation to tell its story clearly, consistently and to the right audiences.

Sharpening the positioning & messaging

Diana and I worked through East West Prevention’s positioning and messaging, sharpening the narrative for the audiences the organization needed to reach.

  • For schools, the message centered on credibility and outcome.

  • For parents, it centered on urgency and recognition; naming the patterns they were already seeing in their kids and giving them language for it.

  • For international audiences, it centered on cultural fluency adapting the framing without diluting the substance.

Building the content roadmap

From there, we built a content roadmap that mapped which stories to tell, in what order and through which channels.

  • Foundation stories that established the why of the work before introducing the how.

  • A mix of story types likecase examples, research-backed explainers and first-person reflections from Diana Hu McDowell.

  • A science-meets-urgency throughline, so no piece of content leaned so far into research that it lost the reader or so far into emotion that it lost authority.

When I started working with Sujata, I was overwhelmed trying to keep my content and brand true to my voice. From our very first chat, she just got it.

She’s incredibly organized, creative, and knows how to bring structure without losing authenticity. I loved how collaborative the process felt. She listened, asked the right questions, and made sure every piece of content actually sounded like me.

Since working with her, my messaging feels sharper, more consistent, and way less stressful to manage. If you’re looking for someone who combines strategy, creativity, and empathy in her work, Sujata’s your person.
